There are significant problems in studying the impact of universal design (UD) in buildings. It is not usually feasible to control for factors that may introduce confounding influences, e.g., the age of a building, occupancy type, programs occurring in the building, size, etc.
As of November 2013, more than 50,000 soldiers have returned home wounded from conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Returning veterans face unique and tremendous challenges, including housing that no longer meets their needs.
isUD is a voluntary initiative based on extensive evidence from research and practice that offers a tool for designers, facility managers, and other stakeholders to implement universal design in their built environment, policies, and business practices.
