Food Gardens in Khayelitsha

Khayelitsha—In a city plagued by poverty and crime, the project seeks to increase household food security and reduce fear of crime in neighborhoods by creating points of intense activities and avenues of informal trade where community members can gather, grow, eat, buy and sell goods as survival strategies. Learning through the use of recycled materials in self-build constructions of food gardens and garden wall systems, individuals and families can become more self-sufficient at home while improving the image of their neighborhoods with greener enclosures.
