Food Gardens in Khayelitsha

Khayelitsha, Cape Town, South Africa — In a township plagued by poverty and crime, the project seeks to increase household food security and to reduce fear of crime in neighborhoods by creating points of intense activities and avenues of informal trade. These are areas where community members can gather, grow, eat, buy and sell goods and thus practice survival strategies. Learning through the use of recycled materials in self-build constructions of food gardens and wall systems, Khayelitsha residents can become more self-sufficient at home while helping to improve the neighborhood image through use of green enclosures.
