Dennis Cannon joined the staff of the Access Board in January 1981 as a Transportation Accessibility Specialist. Before moving to Washington, DC, Mr. Cannon was the President of Synergy Systems, a consulting firm he founded in Los Angeles to plan transportation systems to meet the needs of persons with disabilities. Mr. Cannon was also a consultant to the U.S. DOT on its 1979 section 504 rule, served on the advisory panel to the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to develop guidelines for wheelchair lift and securement design for DOT's Urban Mass Transportation Administration, and was the principal author of the guidelines for vehicle and transportation facility accessibility which form the basis of DOT standards under the ADA. He was the lead staff on development of telecommunications accessibility guidelines under section 255 of the 1996 Telecommunications Act and provided staff support to Advisory Committees developing recommendations on accessibility requirements for vessels, the public right-of-way, and electronic and information technology standards. Mr. Cannon is the author or co-author of several monographs and books.
